Tesla Officially Launches Model Y L In Malaysia; Pricing To Start From RM260,000

Tesla officially launched its plus-sized Model Y, the Model Y L, in Malaysia today. The launch comes just days after we got to preview the EV behind closed doors.

As per its namesake, the Model Y L is another version of the Model Y, just with a longer wheelbase. By that, its interior can now accommodate up to six people comfortably, plus several pieces of medium or large-sized luggage.

Specw-wise, the Tesla Model Y L has 0-60 acceleration of five seconds rather than 4.5. As this is the Premium version of the EV, Tesla says that it offers a WLTP range of 681km. DC charging is rated at 250 kW, like the non-L variant, while its top speed is a breezy 201 km/h. Other details point to a dual-motor AWD, plus NCA (Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide) for its battery.

Internally, the cockpit and large centre console are identical to the non-L model; it’s got dual wireless charging pads, right down to the 8-inch display for passengers sitting in the second row. The wireless chargers, though, are set at 50W and 30W for driver and passenger sides, respectively. Oh, and fancy cubby holes and cupholders.

If you’re looking at measurements, the Model Y L has an overall length of 497.6cm, along with a wheelbase that is 304cm long. As previously reported, the EV is also slightly taller at 166.8cm. And as for luggage space, the whole EV has a combined space of 2,539L.

The extra length also gives passengers seated in the four seats extra legroom, although our writer who previewed it said that the space for those seated far back is dependent on the position of the middle row. Oh, there are USB-C ports for charging between the seats.

As for pricing, Tesla Malaysia gave us an “indicative” starting price of RM260,000. It’s indicative because, clearly, the company hasn’t managed to lock down a final price, and it’s easy to understand one of the reasons why; while not directly affected by the commodity that is at the heart of it, the ongoing war between the US, Israel, and Iran is causing the value of the US dollar to fluctuate greatly. For context, we went from RM3.92 to the US dollar to RM4.04 in a span of a few days.

There is some good news from Tesla. The company says that if you preorder your Model Y L now, it will ensure customers see delivery of their EVs this quarter.

In the mean time, we highly recommend that you check out our preview of the Model Y L.
